US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that the United States is “in very strong” peace negotiations in Afghanistan but he did not know whether they will be successful. “We’re in very strong negotiations with Afghanistan right now,” Trump said, addressing reports after delivering a Thanksgiving holiday message to US soldiers in Afghanistan. “I really think the people of Afghanistan ... are tired of fighting.”
“We are talking about peace and we’ll see if that happens ... We have negotiations going on. I don’t know that they are going to be successful, probably they’re not. Who knows? They might be, they might not be,” he added. This comes as US Special Representative for Afghanistan’s Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad has started his efforts for the peace process of Afghanistan.
Khalilzad has asked the Afghan government and the Taliban to form negotiations team for peace.
Speaking to journalists in Kabul on Sunday, November 18, Khalilzad said the Taliban believes it cannot win the war militarily.
Khalilzad said he hopes a peace deal is reached before April 20 presidential elections and called on the Taliban to use it as an opportunity.
